What Is The Beauty That Winter Season Brings To Nature?
In October, the thicket back of our mail box blazed. Red oak and golden poplar trees took over Silently, I watched a frisky squirrel at’ play. Two gorgeous cock pheasants strolled by with all the dignity of a potentate. I stood, holding my breach until, becoming frightened, the squirrel dashed up a tree and the pheasants, giving their raucous scream, heaved themselves into the air with a great whir of wings. The air lost its softness as the year wore on it became sharp and so clear that is sparkled. Finally frost replaced the dewy carpet on, the trail and I found myself dreading the winter, with that instinctive human dread which somehow- always seems unfounded when we get into that much- maligned season. To my surprise, I found that I liked it very much. Miss the flowers?
Oh, no. I gathered dried seed pods, grasses and leaves to paint for winter bouquets. My bluebirds and robins were replaced by jounces,. downy woodpeckers and flickers. Rabbits and squirrels left little friendly footprints in the snow. Now, without their leafy crowns, I could see ,the shapes of the trees. Decorated only with an occasional bunch of dried leaves or a deserted bird nest, they posed, silhouetted against the winter sky.
Standing knee-deep in soft snow, breathing deep of the clean, sharp air, I whispered a prayer of thankfulness, as the understanding came to me that nothing God makes is bad, not even the harsh winter. It is all good if we just have the desire to gather it to our hearts.
