Ant Problems in Stretford, Urmston and Flixton.

March 24th, 2010

Flying ants are the dread of many homes in summer months leaving many people to dread the summer and the annual flying ants invasion which they expect the summer will herald

Only the unfortunate people who have suffered it will realise the true nature of flying ants in their houses.

Having an infestation of plain old wingless ants is bad enough but when they enter their yearly mating phase the situation can become unthinkable.

Ants often form colonies in the sub-floor areas and in the wall cavities of our houses and these colonies will continue for many years if left untreated and become progressively more troublesome each year.

Our houses are warm and dry and make the perfect places for a thriving ant colony; even solid hard floor is not a hindrance to ants.

Our home heating systems keeps their metabolism even in the depths of winter and my earliest ant treatment was on my birthday, which falls in January!

Ants prefer a sandy soil and there are lots of areas in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester which have more ant infestations than most others, Southport, Blackpool, Bolton, Sale & Altrincham come to mind as regular ant areas.

Unfortunately it is when they are in their mating time that they are most troublesome. Here in Lancashire, Cheshire and Manchester this usually is pretty regularly around the middle of July.

Ants mate in flight and sometime around mid-summer the colony produces winged immature Queens and winged males which in nature would fly off and mate whilst airborne. Many thousands of these winged ants are released per colony and nests tend to time their production so that they mate with ants from neighbouring colonies.

Normally this process starts after a period of days of hot, dry weather and will typically last for about a week although smaller releases will carry on throughout most of the summertime.

Unfortunately when the nest is located under the floor of the dwelling the effects can be horrifying, literally thousands of winged ants are produced into the lower rooms, collecting on windows as they head for the light.

This can be unbelievably upsetting for some people leading to extreme emotional trauma to the extent that people learn to dread the summertime and have actually sold their homes to escape the plague of ants which they know will inevitably appear each summer.

The wet summers of recent years have meant that ant jobs were down on previous years but ants appear to have a way of catching up and 2010 looks set to be a particularly good year for them.

Many people who have this problem try for DIY solutions with powders from hardware stores etc but mostly these efforts do not work as they are not getting to the heart of the infestation which is the nest itself, tucked safely in the cavity wall or under the floor.

Luckily for a lot of people help.

At Harrier Pest Control (subject to site survey) we are able to cure this problem and give an extendable three year guarantee.

The process which is done mainly from the outside of the home, is perfectly safe for animals and children and produces no smell, involves drilling small holes into the cavity walls of the building, not unlike a damp-proof course injection and blowing a long lasting insecticide into the cavity wall under pressure.

This forms an impenetrable barrier across which the ants cannot go and together with a precautionary spray of the inside (if deemed necessary) will gradually bring the ant colony under control.

The holes, which are only 8mm in diameter stay open so it is simply a matter of topping up the cavity walls every 3 to extend the effectiveness of the guarantee in 3 year periods.

This treatment is best done out in the early spring however it can be done at any time of year.

As a strictly limited time offer before our busy period begins we are offering 25 percent off the normalstandard cost until May 30 2010. Whilst we usually cover the whole of Lancashire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester, we are able to travel further afield but this will be at extra cost.
